Protect Yourself

Protect Yourself is the official Tiger Athletic self-defence program. You can start the program at any time and participate in any class without previous training experience. The techniques taught in Protect Yourself employ leverage, technique, and timing, unlike traditional self-defence systems that rely heavily on strength, speed, coordination, and hundreds of hours of training to attain proficiency, so anyone, regardless of age or athletic ability, can make them work against larger opponents.

The most important features of this program are:

  1. The program teaches spatial awareness.
  2. Strikes that can incapacitate an assailant or provide the gap you need to escape.
  3. Focus on common physical attacks, ranging from having your hair grabbed to being pinned to the ground by an assailant and:
  4. Is a fantastic workout!

If you have no previous martial arts or boxing experience and you want to learn how to defend yourself in a fun, safe and cooperative learning environment then Protect Yourself is the perfect program for you.

The program is delivered by a Karate Black Belt and Coaching Science Graduate, one on one or with a friend in an upmarket, private facility in Sandton, by appointment only using a simple two step method.

Step 1: Learn the Techniques 

The Protect Yourself Program is divided into 10 independent, one-hour sessions so that you can learn each technique thoroughly without feeling rushed.

Step 2: Develop Your Reflexes


Protect Yourself qualifies you for the Reflex Development Program (RDP), which is designed to help you overcome the fear of reality and not ‘freezing’ in the event of facing a real-life situation. You learn how to use the self-defence and spatial awareness skills in your everyday life.

This program is designed for participants of all levels of fitness levels and the training is tailored particularly to accommodate the novice. Your sessions include staged realistic scenarios which emphasise the practical use of your learned skills to effectively defend yourself. Whilst it sounds a little scary – most people find it exhilarating and empowering and feel confident that they can defend themselves from training in near real-life situations.

There are many once a year “self-defence” and fly by night “bootcamp” programs that claim to have your safety at heart. Tiger Athletic Sandton provides regular weekly training to practice and improve your skills while you get extremely fit, lose weight, build strength and get toned. The training is among the best and hardest you will get anywhere.

Work outs start at your level of fitness whilst constantly taking you out of your comfort zone, pushing you further each week to guarantee improvements in your skill, strength and conditioning. Within this program you will learn the essentials of strength and conditioning, a mixture of martial arts and Boxing.

This program does not claim to be a miracle pill that turns you into a lean mean fighting machine overnight, rather it is an empowering system of physical and psychological techniques designed to help you assess a threat and overcome fear and anxiety so that you can escape a potentially harmful situation.
